The AquaFish Center of Excellence in ACE II has Five Key partnered with a range of institutions with individual strengths to support its mission including academic institutions, non-profit organizations, and the private sector. The partners include:
CATHOLIC UNIVESITY OF MOZAMBIQUE (UNIVERSIDADE CATÓLICA DE MOÇAMBIQUE)
LUANAR has a partner in Catholic University of Mozambique at regional level. AquaFish ACE will together with the Catholic University of Mozambique ensure collaboration in the areas of curriculum reviews, development of new programmes, teaching and supervision, and provide staff to be trained. Catholic University of Mozambique is one of the two regional universities in ACE II. Both institutions agree to the following collaborative or joint activities:- (i) research and/or training; (ii) joint grant applications; (iii) lectures, symposia, international meetings, conferences, and workshops; (iv) exchange of researchers students and interns; (v) exchange of information, teaching materials and equipment; (vi) mutual use of research space and facilities; (vii) and jointly mobilise students, staff and resources.
UNIVESITY OF MALAWI (UNIMA)
LUANAR has partnered with African Center for Public Health and Herbal Medicine (ACEPHEM) through the AquaFish Center of Excellence. AquaFish and ACEPHEM are the only two centers of excellence in Malawi. ACEPHEM is championed by University of Malawi’s College of Medicine. ACEPHEM aims to address the unmet needs of highly trained academics and researchers in the health sector. ACEPHEM targets training of graduates at MSc/MPH, MPhil/PhD and MMED levels. In the partnership LUANAR and ACEPHEM will enhance capability for research and/or training; prepare joint grant applications; collaborate on lectures, symposia, International meetings, conferences, and workshops; exchange of faculty (researchers) and students; exchange of information, teaching materials and equipment; and mutual use of research space.
Freshwater Fisheries Research Centre (China)
LUANAR is partnering Freshwater Fisheries Research Center (FFRC) of Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences (CAFS) was established in 1978 in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province as a non-profit research institution. FFRC is affiliated to Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) and is a comprehensive institution for fishery research and development, combining together scientific research, training and education, technology extension and information exchange. In this collaborative there are joint activities such as; research and/or training; joint grant applications; lectures, symposia, International meetings, conferences, and workshops; exchange of researchers, students and interns; exchange of information, teaching materials and equipment; mutual use of research space and facilities; jointly mobilise students, staff and resources
The Innovative Fish Farmers Network Trust (IFFNT)
LUANAR also partners with independent fish farmer organisations. The Innovative Fish Farmers Network Trust (IFFNT) is a legally registered innovative fish farmers’ organisation formed in 2005. The network has over 1000 registered fish farmers across the country. IFFNT was formed through Malawi Government Project on Aquaculture Development in Malawi (ADiM) to contribute to the organisation and empowerment of fish farmers in Malawi. In this partnership the IFFNT provides community access to its network of farmers for community action research.
MALAWI DEPARTMENT OF FISHERIES
LUANAR partners the Department of Fisheries, the national authority regarding the Fish Sector in Malawi. The Department has a Fisheries Research Unit (FRU) was established in 1962. The role of the FRU is to undertake relevant and problem-solving management oriented research programmes. Its main goal is to provide information necessary for sustainable exploitation, management, conservation of biodiversity and investment in the fisheries sector through appropriate biological, technological, sociological and environmental research programmes. ACE II ensures that the department, participates in curriculum development and/or reviews, hosts students and academic staff and provide research facilities and equipment for aquaculture and fisheries research
Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST)
LUANAR partners Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST), a public university in Thyolo in South Malawi established through Act of Parliament number 31 of 2012. MUST opened its doors in March 2014 and its mission is to provide a conducive environment for quality education, training, research, entrepreneurship. LUANAR and MUST, collaborate on the following or joint activities; research and/or training; joint grant applications; lectures, symposia, international meetings, conferences, and workshops; exchange of researchers students and interns; exchange of information, teaching materials and equipment; mutual use of research space and facilities; jointly mobilise students, staff and resources.
National Aquaculture and Research Development (Zambia)
LUANAR has partnered with National Aquaculture Research and Development Centre (NARDC, Zambia) as a regional partner on the research front. ACE II leverages on regional research capacity and experience NARDC do have to support students and staff in conducting and reaching. The two institutions (Aqua-Fish and NARDC) collaborate and perform joint activities: Research and/or training; exchange of researchers students and interns; exchange of information, teaching materials and equipment; mutual use of research space and facilities jointly mobilize students, staff and resources.
LUANAR partners with Mzuzu University (MZUNI), a peer university at national level. MZUNI is one of the principal universities in Malawi established in 1997. In ACE II, LUANAR and Mzuni will host students for research and internship and participate in joint research as well as teaching. MZUNI has grown to be an istitution and a formidable force in the academia in Malawi. MZUNI delivers high quality teaching and is experienced in curriculum development and/or reviews. LUANAR nd MZUNI collaborates in research and supervision for the MSc and PhD students.
