On Saturday, 28 February 2026, Lessons in Conservation, a youth-led non-profit organisation that provides conservation lessons to primary and secondary school students in underprivileged areas across five countries, together with five student clubs at the Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) Bunda Campus, joined forces in a clean-up exercise aimed at promoting environm

The initiative brought together over eighty students who worked hand-in-hand to restore cleanliness across key areas of the campus. In her remark, Patience Balalika, a fifth-year Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Lilongwe Lessons in Conservation Fundraising Manager, said, "It was an excellent activity, and we hope that other organisations emulate the same spirit. We need to own environmental stewardship"

Among activities carried out, students collected litter, swept pathways, and cleared blocked drainage systems. The exercise covered the premises of the Gateway Administration Block, the library, Bunda clinic to Kristine Bonvie hostel. To ensure safety, students were provided with disposable face masks, gloves, and garbage bags for a safe and efficient clean-up process. During the initiative, students also assessed the need for additional strategic locations to improve waste disposal and management.

The collaboration involved clubs like Bunda Forestry Association, One Health Club, Hydromechanic Eco-Tech systems, alongside volunteers from various programs. One of the key challenges observed is that plastics often remain uncorrected, and educating the student community on proper waste management, improving the waste-collection schedule by those responsible. Treating some waste as a second-hand resource can reduce contamination and keep the environment cleaner.
